The Bomar: Bookmobile

Through its Bookmobile, the Shelbyville-Bedford County Public Library provides high quality library service to day cares who live inside member library communities.

If you are a day care or head start that would like the Bookmobile to come to your facility, please contact us at (931) 684-7323 or email our Youth Services Librarian, Emilee’ Le Clear, at youthservices@sbcplibrary.org. You can also fill out the form below.

JAMES L. BOMAR, JR

James Lafayette Bomar, Jr. was born in the small community of Raus in Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1914.  He was educated in the schools of Bedford County before attending Cumberland University in Lebanon where he earned his Bachelor’s degree and his LLA.  He was admitted to the Tennessee Bar Association in 1937 and served a term in the state senate before serving as a soldier in World War II.  He served in the Tennessee State Senate, House of Representatives being Speaker of the House for five of his seven terms, and as Lieutenant Governor during his political career. After retiring from politics, he served in various clubs and organizations most notably as International Rotary President in 1979 and 1980.

He initiated a five-year program to administer polio vaccine in different parts of the world and the success of the program resulted in the Polio Plus Program established in 1985 which helped to all but eradicate polio throughout the world. A statue displayed in the Shelbyville-Bedford County Public Library depicts a well-known chapter in his life of service.  It portrays him about to vaccinate a small child and an older sibling afflicted with the disease thanking him for helping his sister to avoid his fate.

We salute Mr. Bomar and are proud to see this bookmobile carry his name and legacy of service.
